The need for timely postnatal information, support and evidenced-based care for sexual and reproductive health is highlighted in NICE guidance, government policy, and by professional and regulatory organisations.  Health visitors are ideally placed to have conversations about contraceptive choices and sexual and reproductive health with women, their partners and families during this time - including the interpregnancy period.

Preconception Care Toolkit

Produced by the UK Preconception Partnership Early- and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCR) Network and the Faculty of Public Health Special Interest Group on Health of Women and Girls – and developed in response to public and expert consensus on the need to tackle inequalities in preconception health and care.

The toolkit is designed for professionals commissioning and delivering health services in England, with many elements also relevant to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (including teams in Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), Local Authorities and healthcare providers). The toolkit supports professionals to:

  • Access data indicators to assess and monitor population preconception health
  • Find key guidance and summaries of the latest evidence for commissioning and implementation of interventions to improve preconception health
  • Learn about different approaches and models of preconception care in England, including service designs that aim to reduce health inequalities.
