The need for timely postnatal information, support and evidence-based care is highlighted in NICE guidance, Government publications, and by professional and regulatory organisations.

Health visitors are ideally placed to have conversations with women and their families about contraceptive choices, including in the interpregnancy period. However, iHV research revealed that, despite this universal opportunity, health visitors predominantly reported they lacked the confidence or training to provide consistent postnatal contraception advice and support. This training provides opportunity for health visitors to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence to support with contraceptive choices. Being offered to health visitors alongside midwives strengthens the provision of postnatal contraception advice and the continuity between midwifery and health visiting.
