The iHV Promoting Care Across Cultures Ambassador Programme was developed with funding from The Burdett Trust for Nursing. It is a national initiative designed to strengthen culturally aware, place‑based health visitor leadership. The programme responds to persistent inequalities in maternal and perinatal outcomes and addresses the gap in structured training for health visitors, skill mix teams and multi‑agency practitioners in cultural awareness and sensitivity.
This Ambassador training equips practitioners with enhanced knowledge, confidence and leadership to better understand Black women’s experiences in the interpregnancy period, recognise and challenge bias and racism in practice, and apply quality‑improvement approaches to improve care and outcomes.
The programme has been co‑developed and is facilitated in partnership with experts by experience and subject matter specialists, ensuring authentic insight, lived experience, and evidence‑based learning at its core.
Ambassadors training
Ambassadors are distinct individuals with attributes of:
- A passion for the subject area
- An aptitude for teaching their colleagues (not necessarily a formal qualification but experience and confidence to teach groups)
- The support of their organisation to allow them to share resources and a short awareness session with their colleagues.
To enable participants to become iHV Ambassadors in Promoting Care Across Cultures, equipped with the knowledge and understanding to become place-based leaders in effecting change to meet the needs of Black women and their families.
By the end of the training participants will:
- Demonstrate deeper understanding of the needs of Black women during the perinatal period to support the provision of personalised, trauma–informed care.
- Apply learning from the evidence and insights to work in partnership with Black women to ensure safe, evidence-based, and compassionate practice.
- Be equipped with knowledge of quality improvement and tools that support local change and promote culturally sensitive service.
- Become local Ambassadors for Black women’s health, acting as local advocates to support service improvement.
One day as two half-days programme:
The curriculum is delivered in two parts across two half‑day sessions, allowing time for reflective practice between sessions and enabling practitioners to prepare for the second part of the programme.

- Part two: Quality Improvement
