Nutrition and healthy weight are key contributors to future health and wellbeing for the whole family, and evidence demonstrates that this is a key public health priority throughout the life course, starting in the pre-conception period. It is therefore essential that those working in early years services are equipped to facilitate this work, and health visiting services are excellently placed to work alongside families to support them in making healthy choices.

The Healthy Weight, Healthy Nutrition programmes offer an evidence-based, holistic approach to upskill practitioners to be confident in having conversations with families around healthy nutrition from the pre-conception period onwards, physical activity, and oral health, -all of which are significant contributors to healthy weight.

There is both an iHV Champion and iHV Ambassador programme available in Healthy Weight, Healthy Nutrition.

Having completed the training the champions and ambassadors will receive access to the online digital toolkit, and updates for two years following their initial attendance. After the two years if they would like to continue to access the support they would need to renew by paying a small fee.

Types of training

Champions

This one-day course is aimed at health visitors or those practising at an equivalent level. It will prepare practitioners to be place-based informal leaders of Healthy Weight, Healthy Nutrition, using opportunities to influence stakeholders and services around needs of families, to identify gaps locally, and to improve support available. Additionally, the day will equip Champions to deliver a half-day cascade session to enable colleagues to also become Healthy Weight, Healthy Nutrition Champions. The latest evidence base will be used to provide participants with a deeper knowledge and understanding of this important area of public health.

Champions will have access to Champions training resources, our digital toolkit of evidence and useful resources, newsletters, updates and webinars to maintain their confidence and competence (while grant funding continues). Access to Champions materials is granted for 2 years following training and can be renewed for a small fee following this period.
